In the Canadian High Arctic, a wave’s motion is frozen against the backdrop of an iceberg
The Canadian High Arctic is a remote, rugged, and pristine area of the high north. I was on assignment for National Geographic, the area in which I was photographing this day was Queen’s Harbour. Motoring around in a Zodiac raft, this stunning blue berg appeared in the near distance.I ended up sitting in this one location for almost 45 minutes, watching the waves move past, break before, and often emulate the famous painting “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” by the Japanese painter, Hokusai. We have tools on the camera, such as shutter and aperture control, that can become tools to assist in the creative process. In this situation, a very high shutter speed I knew was necessary to “freeze” the motion of the wave. Moment occurs in landscape as well as other disciplines of photography. Here, the moment of the breaking wave against the perfect background gives that energy to the photo.
