At Brown Bluff, along the Antarctic Peninsula, a colony of Adelie penguins leap into the ocean. Moment is one of the more critical components in the success (or failure) of a powerful photograph. Photographing wildlife often can be described by the old saw describing flying a plane, “hours of boredom interrupted by moments of sheer terror.” Well, maybe not that dramatic or life-threatening, but when one is photographing an animal, time can stretch on, seemingly, forever. You sit in a Zodiac, camera at your eye, at these penguins as they mill around the edge of the iceberg, hoping something happens. If you put your camera down, almost a guarantee that the moment will happen then. And, trying to get all the elements in the right place, adds another layer of possible frustration.
